Nullspace gallery is pleased to present a new installation that encompasses video and sculpture by Jenny K. Hager.

Artist Statement:The inventor who works in this laboratory is a pseudo-scientist who is interested in achieving flight through the mechanics of swimming. Through the exploration of ideas, sketches, and models, the inventor studies possible methods of achieving flight by these means. The specific focus of this fieldwork is scyphozoa.

Jenny Hager is an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of North Florida, where she is

finishing her fifth year. She received her MFA in Sculpture and Digital Media from San Jose State

University in San Jose, CA. She also holds a BA in Art Education and a BFA in Art Studio from the

University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. Interested in a variety of processes and materials, including

steel, cast iron, post-it notes, video, wood, digital photography and found objects, she finds inspiration

in dreams, objects from her childhood, gadgets, sea life and other curiosities. She is also very

interested in collaboration; the spirit of community important in both her teaching practice and in her

own work. Hager’s work has been exhibited across the country and most recently in the Cymru Ironstone

Castle Exhibition in Wales. She also recently had a video installation at the Ogden Museum of Southern

Art in New Orleans.

Where you are right now is only half the story. This is only half the installation. One half takes place at the Skyway Central Station at Pearl and Bay and the other half takes place at nullspace gallery at 108 E. Adams St. Simultaneously but distinct. Connected in time, separated by space. It is about fracture and division.

On the platform of the Skyway station, you are met by jubilant well-wishers! “Welcome home”, they shout. There are noisemakers and singing and joy in the air. There are colorful signs to greet you and make you feel at home. Home free. But there is something amiss. One of the signs, spray painted like graffiti, points to the presence of an invisible subgroup, struggling to make itself heard, aching for identity and recognition. The hand held signs, with their gradient color background allude to the signs held by the followers of Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church, an anti-gay hate group which pickets the funerals of soldiers and believes that God hates America for its immoral ways. The Skyway itself, stands for American optimism, a railway for the future, like the one at Disney, full of pride and promise, from a past which held that technology would make our lives comfortable, leisure-filled and safe. Home Free.

Across town and out of sight of the Skyway station, the video installation at nullspace presents a peek into the life of Tony Campbell, a Vietnam veteran and widower with a history of poverty and substance abuse, who finds himself living on our streets, Home Free, as it were. His candid depiction of that life shown in one gallery window is contrasted with the black and white video in the other, where white suburbanites build homes and play with their children. This disconcerting juxtaposition conjures up an image of two distinct Americas, one bright-eyed and bushy, the other downtrodden. Like at the Skyway station, a subgroup we prefer remain invisible, the homeless, injects itself onto the stage of our mythical homeland. “Welcome Home”, cheers the crowd on the platform, two words Tony Campbell will never hear.

JTA turns Art Walk into Art Ride

In celebration of its 55th anniversary, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) announces a new way in which it supports the arts and downtown Jacksonville: Art Ride. On December 1, the JTA Skyway will become part of Downtown Vision’s Art Walk by displaying works by local artists at five of its stations. Art Walk attendees will also be able to ride the Skyway system for free from 5-10 p.m.

In partnership with Null Space Gallery and Williams-Cornelius & Associates, JTA will showcase local artists including Jim Smith, Kelly Messer, Russell Maycumber, Clark Lunberry, Ian Chase, Andrew Chadwick and the Leon Castelli Group, who will invigorate thought and interpretation using sight, sound and movement. Art Riders can expect a diverse range in art installations at the Skyway stations such as mixed media, sculpture, drawings, roving sound, performance and video projection.

Art installations will be displayed at the Central and Hemming Plaza stations Downtown and the Kings Avenue, Riverplace and San Marco stations on the Southbank. Art Walk participants can begin their Art Ride experience at any Skyway station, and those who visit all five station exhibits will be eligible to win gift certificates from local restaurants including Burrito Gallery, Café Nola, Chew, European Street Cafe, Indochine and Uptown Market or a Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art membership. Parking is free at any Skyway station lot after 5 p.m.

Based on ridership during November Art Walk, the Riverside Trolley will, once again, have extended service until midnight.

Another sad loss for Jacksonville as Joey Thate and Kim Barry of Suite 106 are leaving for LA. We wish then the best! The only bright spot for us in this situation is that they are selling some incredible work with deep discounts this Saturday Oct 23rd from 11am to 8:30pm at their Landing location. Here is a bit from Kim’s moving FB post :

As always, the paintings are available for sale and some up to 50% off . We will have handmade prints by yours truly, signed and numbered for $10 to $20. And we will have a simple donation jar if you want to support that way as well. We will accept cash, checks, and credit cards through Paypal for any purchases. For those of ou challenged by distance, we will be offering the opportunity to purchase via FB or call Kim at 904 686 4149. You can also support just by inviting your friends to this event. We will We promise we will do right with your investment.

This Sunday beginning at 10pm at nullspace gallery. Should be a great show!

A fine time was had at our Saturday morning opening. We will be open for October artwalk so come check it out. Its a perfect example of what can happen when you give an artist an entire space to work with and the freedom to do whatever, which is what we are all about.
